Activity Idea: Fruit and Veggie Challenge

Source: Healthy Kids Challenge, Acting Up booklet
Description: Kids will toss balls or scarves and identify fruits and veggies within different color groups
Grades: K-2

Supplies:

Soft balls or scarves in fruit and veggie colors*
(Blue/Purple, Green, White, Yellow/Orange, Red)
A Healthy Message Bulletin Board at Rawls Byrd Elementary (SHIP)

Directions:

1.   Before beginning the activity, identify examples of fruit and veggies in each color group.
2.  In a classroom or large area, instruct kids to stand in a circle about an arm’s length apart.
3.  Hold up a ball/scarf and ask the group to call out names of fruits and veggies in the color group represented by the ball.
4.  Tell the group that the ball will be passed around the circle in different ways. Choose a child to start by having them toss the ball into the air for the person next to them to catch, and so on, around the circle. Call out different commands as the ball goes around the circle, i.e., roll the ball to the next person, clap before catching, and/or reverse the direction of the circle.
5.

Add new ball colors, and for each new color introduced, identify names of fruits and veggies within that color group.
