Healthy Kids Challenge helps people take action for kids to eat, move, and enjoy balance




HKC is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit led by registered licensed dietitians with years of school, program and community wellness experience. For over 10 years, HKC has pioneered the path of onsite and distance assistance.

Our mission is to “help school, health, business and community leaders take action for kids to eat, move, and enjoy a healthy balance."


What we do! 

We offer solutions through workshops, events, toolkits, a website, newsletters and programming. 

Six healthy eating and active play practices make teaching and learning simple and fun.     

 

What can YOU do to Take the Challenge?  Become a *KidLink™

HKC offers many resources and services and different levels of involvement. 

You can do SOMETHING!

  • My Healthy Challenge of the Month. A free monthly E-newsletter offers a personal healthy eating or physical activity challenge. The focus is on six healthy messages – not weight. Three to five simple challenges are offered each month. Pick at least one to Take the Challenge for your own wellness and see how many others you can get to Take the Challenge with you!
  • A Teaching Toolbox that includes
    • Resources with tips you can download. There are options for individuals, families or youth leaders and teachers
    • WOWS, a free weekly E-newsletter with simple action ideas for youth leaders and teachers
    • An online store with youth leader and teacher idea toolkits, many focused on K-5, but also ideas and resources for all ages
    • Options for training and workshops or presentations
    • At higher levels of involvement, HKC offers program development
    • Specifically for schools, HKC offers a year long distance assistance School Challenge. Participating schools receive resources, tips, and help by phone and E-mail with help to put wellness policies into action and help kids reach their best learning potential.
  • Special events such as a healthy fundraiser option, Dance for Health, or the middle school Stirring Up Health™ Recipe Contest, help provide fun opportunities with an added learning experience bonus.

History:


  • Great beginnings! Healthy Kids Challenge (HKC) was founded in 1998. Cooking Light magazine hired current HKC Director, Vickie L. James, RD, LD as director and creator following a highly successful Cooking Light community outreach project. Read more about HKC's history with Cooking Light...
  • Award winner! Healthy Kids Challenge has received the honored American Dietetic Association Anita Owen Award for Most Innovative Educational Program and the Advertising Council -Community Action Network (CAN) Community Action Networks Service Award Honoring the Media & Corporate Communities for Outstanding Solutions to Social Problems.
