Supplies: Downloadable sheet from Produce for Better Health Foundation, 5 A Day the Color Way http://www.5aday.org/pdfs/kids/track/trackcolor02.pdf , sheets of paper, pencils, crayons, flipchart or blackboard

Use this activity in the classroom to reinforce the message that eating a variety of fruits and veggies from the rainbow colors is healthy!

Variety of Rainbow Colors

In the classroom, ask kids to raise their hands and name all the different fruits and veggies they know. Explain that fruits and veggies provide vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, energy, and fiber which are important for a healthy body. Lead a discussion about how healthful it is to eat fruits and veggies in a rainbow of colors: Red, Yellow-Orange, White, Green, and Blue-Purple. Explain that eating fruits and veggies daily from each of these color groups gives them an AWE-some body! Pass a piece of paper, pencil and a copy of the downloadable sheet to each child.

  1. Have each person:
    a. Write all the different fruits and veggies eaten in the last 2 days on his/her sheet.
    b. Check to see how many different colors are represented.
  2. Ask kids to look in the produce section the next time they go to the grocery store and think about ways they can add more color to their fruit and veggie rainbow.
  3. Together, write and graph – on a flipchart or blackboard – the numbers of ALL the different kinds of fruits and veggies eaten by the entire group the last 2 days.

*As an additional activity, have the kids draw and color their favorite fruit or veggie and create a (Red, Yellow-Orange, White, Green, and Blue-Purple) rainbow for a bulletin board display
